Description

The Data Science B.S. curriculum surpasses bare collection and interpretation of data. An expansion of these applications are foundational courses that include critical thinking, articulate translation, and data immersion. The mathematical pillar of the Data Science program teaches students fundamental calculus and statistical skills, and the computer science pillar teaches students the utilization of software when working with data. Most importantly, the data science pillar intertwines the two and teaches students to provide practical solutions to problems involving data.

This portfolio serves as a glimpse into the Data Science student’s curriculum. Viewers can observe the varying skills required of a Data Science student with pieces ranging from research projects, research papers, and rhetorical analyses. The academic work provided is meant to show a data science student’s ability to process, visualize, and analyze data, address problems of interest, and translate data problems in any format to any audience. Moreover, the work provided exemplifies the adaptability data science students possess, which they can use in a broad range of real-world industries.

This portfolio includes the following works by Cassie DiBenedetti:

  1. Has Your City Felt the Effects of Climate Change? - A Research Project - This piece collects climate data from chosen variables from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Additionally, it forms a hypothesis about how the chosen variable may have changed from the first time period to the second, and tests this hypothesis using statistical tools.

  2. Birth Weights of Babies - Exploratory Data Analysis Case Study - The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), using data provided in part by the US Department of Health and Human Services as well as the National Center for Health Statistics, maintains a database on all babies born in a given year. This project will investigate a subset of the CDC’s database of births to look for possible relationships between the birth weight of a baby and the age of the mother, or whether or not she smoked cigarettes or drank alcohol during her pregnancy.

  3. Research Paper - The Intersection of Data Science and Criminal Justice - This piece is a research paper reflecting on the connection between the fields of data science and criminal justice.

  4. Research Paper - The Consequences of Racial Invisibility on Asian American Youth - This piece engages the place of Asian-Americans in racial conversations in America. Inspecting the "model minority" myth, it works through the consequences of the relative "racial invisibility" of Asian-Americans youth in racial discourse in the US.

Rhetorical Analysis - Dear America, Notes of an Undocumented Citizen - This piece is a rhetorical analysis written for a Global Diversity course analyzing a journalist’s memoir.
