Abstract
This M.M. Thesis demonstrates three important sources of bass trombone solo literature: extant works originally for the bass trombone, transcriptions, and new commissions. Samuel Adler's Canto II is an important part of the bass trombone's solo repertoire. By performing Schumann's Phantasiestücke on bass trombone, its original functional intent is realized. Of special notice is the work composed specifically for this performance by Scott Steele. New works will continue to expand the currently limited solo bass trombone repertoire.
