Abstract
Dorothy Day (1897-1980), author of the modern spiritual classic The Long Loneliness and founder of the CatholicWorker, is on the path to canonization in the Catholic Church. Robert Coles (1929-), James Agee Emeritus Professor of Social Ethics at Harvard University, civil rights activist, and Pulitzer Prize winning author of the landmark five-volume Children of Crisis, is one of America’s preeminent public intellectuals. This lecture will explore how Day influenced Coles personally and intellectually, why Coles was so taken with Day that he wrote two books about her, and what the ongoing significance of their friendship is today.
